As one of the nation’s leading cryptozoologists, Emily Nite is used to investigating the strange and unusual. An expert in all things extraordinary, she’s approached to lead the formation of a new team into the West Virginia wilderness to evaluate reports of a giant spider, but her quest for answers leads her to the discovery of an eight-legged monstrosity no one could have prepared for.

Existing for eons beneath our earth, these aren’t your garden variety spiders. They’re bloodthirsty monsters that will rip apart anything—and anyone—in their path, and while a town fights to survive Emily and her team will have to do everything they can to beat back the terror before there’s a new species at the top of the food chain!

Crazy Eights eBook James Melzer

For a self-published book, Crazy Eights was several notches above the norm. It’s bad enough that to find good icky bug, I have to search on-line on sites like Amazon, but also I have to seek out self-published authors because traditional publishing houses don’t seem to want to publish good B-movie creature feature icky bug stuff.

Crazy Eights has it all. A high body count, lots of monsters who just happen to be actual icky bugs, and an interesting cast of characters.

All of that’s well and good but what I find with these self-published books that is often their downfall is the often poor writing and editing. In this case, the writing was almost top notch. It was solid third-person, past tense.

The story started with a bang right off. The author kept the point of view solid with controlled characters through most of the story, which made reading it addictive and a breeze.

This was the majority of the novel right up to the two-thirds point where things broke down a bit. The point of view skewed toward omniscient and head-hopping in a few chapters and the editing broke down with typos and formatting issues. However, it picked back up and went back to the excellent writing in the final quarter of the book.

Overall, I loved it and had a great time. It was an enjoyable ride and a good start to a potential series. I’d love to see more from this author. Highly recommended.

Crazy Eights eBook James Melzer Reviews

This book was absolutely great. I found it hard to put down! The story was so good, you couldn't care less about typo errors, which was very few. Definitely a good book to read
Off the wall crazy critters mixed with some bad guys who get theirs in the end.
Kept me interested throughout, and that's the best compliment I can give.
Wasn't expecting the twists and turns. The characters are believable. Adding in the humor laced throughout kept it going. Want more!
This kind of stuff is right up my alley! I loved every bit of the story. It was fast paced, full of action, and loaded with giant spiders. Ready for more adventures with these characters!
I freakin' love spiders, so my rating's not that surprising, but in seriousness, Melzer's penned an engaging and epic novel about arachnids. The military unit called in to stop these creepy crawlers is pushed to the limit.

If you're afraid of the one dropping down behind you from the ceiling, this will really keep you on your toes!
A fun creature feature horror/sci-fi story. I enjoyed it
I loved the book - it totally creeped me out. It does need more editing though. It's jarring when you're reading and a word is left out or mispelled. Also, the names switched over too much, between the character's first names, last names and code names. Pick one set of names and stick with it! Anyway, the story was great, the spiders were horrific and it kept my interest
